Meet the Family Behind the Business

Chateau is the combined work of husband and wife duo Dean White of White’s Pottery and Susan Castle of Queen Bee Garden & Gifts, both formerly of Central New York. Dean is a potter with almost 50 years of experience. In addition to making all White’s Pottery pieces by hand, Dean also teaches pottery classes for students of all ages. Susan, with a passion for European garden design and artisan craftsmanship, handcrafts all Queen Bee Jewelry and oversees operations in the brick and mortar shop.

Susan and Dean met in 1997 when Susan began taking pottery classes, and they married in 2001. The couple relocated to Cape Vincent in 2015 and quickly began restoring the property on the corner of Broadway and Esselstyne Streets, which had once operated as a pharmacy and soda shop in the early 20th century. Since becoming Cape residents, the two have become involved in several community organizations including the Cape Vincent Chamber of Commerce, the Cape Vincent Improvement League, the Arts Council, and River Voices Rising. In 2018, they were joined in the Cape by their daughter Kate, owner of Hedge Witch Botanicals and general manager of Chateau. A former arts administrator, Kate is happy to now continue the legacy of this family business.
